Bright pink satin, purple tulle and red lace formed a colorful oasis at Dora Grace Bridal on March 11, as the Cinderella Dress Project from Fort Collins High School took over the boutique to provide low-cost prom dresses and suits to PSD students.
More than 600 dresses -- a third of which were brand new donations from local stores -- sold for prices between $5 and $20. The annual event sprang out of fashion classes at FCHS, and this year was coordinated by volunteers from student council.
From hanging and bagging dresses to marketing the event and soliciting donations, the student leaders practiced real-world problem solving and service learning. They were accompanied by a team of parents and community volunteers.
"We want to make sure everyone can afford to go to prom," said Angela Miller, a parent volunteer who helped coordinate and market the event.
Girls tried on the sparkly gowns to the beat of peppy pop music, spinning circles for friends and moms who gave feedback on each option, laughing with gleeful disbelief at the enormous discounts.
Along with affordable dresses, this year volunteers made a special effort to find great raffle prizes like certificates for updos and manicures to help offset the cost of all the extras that accompany prom night
